This machine is called a drill-shaft rig. It allows the construction crews to drill a hole in the ground to pour concrete and steel for the foundation of the Extension piers. Drilled shafts are often used for different types of construction projects such as this one. These elements are high-capacity, cast-in-place deep foundations, designed to support the construction and reinforce the structure. Beginning this month, Extension crews will conduct nighttime drill shaft pours that will require intermittent lane closures. This affects the eastbound and westbound inside turn lanes on Gandy Boulevard, weather permitting.
